My 30th Birthday, and the Concept of ‘Age’

Home/Uncategorized/My 30th Birthday, and the Concept of ‘Age’

30 years of life.
And today, I feel more vibrant and alive than any other.

I feel excited to be 30 – my ‘stupid 20s’ are over!

I say this playfully, of course. I don’t intend to come across as though my 20s were ‘bad’ years by any means, it’s quite the opposite.

My 20s were wild; I loved these years of mine – all the insane adventures I found myself a part of, (or unexpected places I woke up in.. lol). I lived every experience of my 20s – especially those ‘party years’ – so deeply that I’ve never had a craving to travel back in time.

Instead, when I say ‘stupid’ what I’m referring to is the fact that much of my 20s were spent worrying about things that really don’t matter in the grand scheme of things. A lot of my energy was spent on dead-ends; my attention was going to undeserving destinations, and I found myself in many situations that were not reflective of the even-energy exchange I am mindful and aware of now.

‘Stupid’ now – in retrospect – because I have learned through my many mistakes. Yet I will make note that every step of the process, and every ‘stupid’ situation, was absolutely integral and inevitable – they were life shaping, in the highest sense. I am truly grateful for all of it.

I really, really, loved turning 30. I feel great, and really happy to be me.
This truly is a milestone year for the soul’s journey.

I’ve gained wisdom through an entire decade in my adult life; turning 30 is truly a birthday everyone can be proud of, especially in looking back to see just how far you’ve come.

Of course, ‘the work’ is ongoing and never ending. My teens consisted of a LOT of questioning, and in my 20s it was a time where I first began peeling back my layers and re-writing my story. Now in my 30s the same cycle of work continues – yet this time with a new decade of wisdom under my belt.

If you’re turning (or recently turned) 30, aren’t you so excited for this new chapter in your life?!

Think of how much you have truly evolved from the day you turned 20! Think of all of the experiences you believed to be the end of the world, and look at you now – standing taller and stronger than ever before!

I ask this question as an inspiration from the many conversations I’ve had with different people leading up to my birthday. Whenever I mentioned my age, there was an undertone of “oh, I’m sorry” that kind of shocked me; I may as well have been given condolences for my ‘old age’.

I can summarize with two themes, or repeated points that came up in conversation.

One being ‘beware of turning 30 – your body just doesn’t feel or work in the same way it used to’ – and of course, you guys already know I am more than happy to play devil’s advocate on this one 😉

If you are experiencing any kind of decline in your vitality, the answer is not ‘age’. Instead, somewhere in your mental, physical, emotional, or spiritual health there is a disconnect and lack of support.

I look at it this way: in our teens and early 20s, we get ‘hall passes’. We can pretty much eat ice cream for dinner, never work out a day in our lives, drink an entire bottle of vodka without a hangover, be on team ‘no sleep’ and still go to work at 9am the next day. Yeah, we were pretty reckless back then, and our body systems gave us this fun chance to wild-out without any care or responsibility. The ‘hall passes’ suited us well for that time in our lives!

Now? Yeah, not so much, but only because we are in a different stage of life! As more years pass, we are called into mindfulness. We are called into nurturing and cultivating a close relationship to our bodies, and our health. Our ‘hall passes’ may be gone, but it doesn’t mean the next step is a decline in how our bodies work and feel for us. Instead, it’s quite the opposite. From here, we can set up our ‘aging process’ on a very positive note just by learning to support our bodies in a holistic balance!

Now, it’s essential that we consider getting enough exercise, eating well, drinking enough water, getting quality sleep, and keeping our stress levels down. Now, we have to pay attention to our bodies as they speak to us.

Feeling your metabolism slow down? Then, it’s time for a liver cleanse.

Experiencing weight gain? Check the quality of your nutrition & lifestyle habits.

When it comes to health, there is an answer to every problem; in every seed of adversity lies an equal part success.

We are not at the mercy of ‘age’, nor is that the culprit of the ‘problem’. We can very well keep our youth and vibrancy, but now we have to put in the conscious effort to do so. Support your body, so it can support you! The real issue lies in the disconnect you may have from your body and it’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health, along with beliefs around the aging process itself.

Speaking of beliefs, this is a perfect time to give you a recommendation for one of my FAVOURITE books around the idea of age. It’s called: Healthy at 100 by John Robbins, a researcher for National Geographic who set out to interview Centurions (communities of people who commonly lived over 100), to find out their secrets and ways of life. In this book you can read of foods for longevity, cultural traditions and lifestyles, values based around the importance of relationships and community, and a few surprising facts – like 90 year old men not experiencing any decline in hormones – like testosterone – and having the libido for a healthy sex life!

The second point in my conversations was much less of a point, and more so an authentic sharing. The main idea was that of ‘timelines’ and unfulfilled expectations surrounding them. There is so much pressure in society to ‘do things’ by a certain age, and when we are constantly bombarded by the highlight reels of social media it can create a lot of stress. Know that EVERYTHING is always perfect in this moment. You, reading this exactly where you are, YOU ARE PERFECT. Everything around you is perfect, and you are exactly where you need to be.

Consider the idea of Divine Timing – know the plan of universal intelligence is ALWAYS at work. I personally believe it is the ego’s ignorance to fight the past, or think it was ever supposed to be any other way than it is now. Our soul incarnated to EXPERIENCE and learn specific lessons; if we are held back, it’s for a reason that we may not be aware of. Remember, everything looks very different from a higher perspective! And really, if you think about it, aren’t we all just trying to do our best at any given time?

Maybe one of the lessons you are currently working through requires more time than the next person you are comparing yourself to. Maybe, just maybe, everything is in fact lining up in your favour! And, once you can shift your mindset to connect to your abundant nature, you will begin attracting different experiences in your life. Maybe your lesson took a certain amount of HELL NO, to finally reach full clarity on that HELL YES.

Be patient with yourself, my darling, you are absolutely perfect as you are! If you are left with a desire to be ‘farther along’ in certain areas, thats perfect – congratulate yourself, because that awareness is ALL YOU NEED. Having that intention will set energy in motion to fulfill your desires, so long as you keep your head up high and keep trusting Divine Timing in your life.

Before I end off, I want to share open and honestly because this seems to come up in conversation often. It’s funny, my best friend Sabrina and I have always discussed this same idea (for almost 10 years now) and there has not been one feeling around this that has changed…

I’ve always felt weird about the idea of ‘age’ and no, I don’t identify with its number.

I feel you can ‘age’ yourself just by believing you are ‘old’. I mean yes, ‘growing old’ is inevitable in the physical sense, but I don’t believe it is in terms of the spirit. Your energy stays as young as you allow it to, and in turn, it is that energy which translates through you to animate your body.. and your life’s experience.

LIFE IS AN AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL ADVENTURE that we are so blessed to have incarnated to experience. We are powerful beings; co-creators of whatever we want to do or be in this life! How amazing is that! Think about this if you are ever feeling anxious about ‘timelines’ in your life: our power lies in being able to change ANYTHING in THIS moment, along with wholeheartedly owning our past as a part of our evolving wisdom we could not of possibly gotten here without.

That being said, be sure to buckle up and ENJOY this cosmic ride in your meat suit… after all, were literally all just here, living on this rock, and floating in INFINITE SPACE AND NOTHINGNESS..
Just saying 😉
